Not all attorneys are created equal, and you may need more than one. For example, the lawyer who can best guide you in contract negotiations may not be the most effective counsel when it comes to employment issues. Ask about areas of expertise and specialization before retaining a lawyer.

No matter how good you are at what you do, chances are you can’t do it all—and you shouldn’t—so find ways to network and get in touch with professionals who can help you make your business a success.

Allen Hager advises new business owners to get involved with their local chamber of commerce and find other small-business owners who are successful in the area. “It wouldn’t necessarily have to be in your industry, but find out from them who you might turn to for professional advice,” he recommends.

Under Advisement

Not even the president of the United States is expected to know everything. That’s why he surrounds himself with advisors—experts in particular areas who provide knowledge and information to help him make decisions. Savvy small-business owners use a similar strategy.

Advisory boards can be structured to help with the direct operation of your company and to keep you informed on various business, legal, and financial trends that may affect you.

Assemble a team of volunteer advisors to meet with you periodically to offer advice and direction. Include caregivers, volunteers, seniors, professional advisors, and other community members. Let prospective advisors know what your goals are and that you don’t expect them to take an active management role or to assume any liability for your company or for the advice they offer.

When you ask for honesty, don’t be offended when you get it. Your feathers may get a little ruffled when someone points out something you are doing wrong, but the awareness will be beneficial in the long run. Also, be sure to provide feedback to the board—good or bad. Let them know when you have done something based on their advice and what the results were. Finally, be willing to serve on similar advisory boards for other companies.
